There are 3 classic looks in this TV Program and I think this is the type of idea women want when it comes to makeup.
A bit like TV, Films and entertainment ~ they want choice.
Also I would guess you could still apply the looks in different ways to suit your face like in the 60’s video.
I will try all 3, but might have to adapt them to suit me like the 60’s video explains.
Also makeup has moved on and we have new products we can add such as chisel cheeks by Barry M.
This is one of my favourite episodes, not just because of the pairing of Joan Collins and Pauline Collins which is always really good. But now I’ve been studying film fashion, I realise as a woman I am excited by the makeup and fashion in this episode.
Joan Collins
There is a classic video on You Tube of Joan Collins applying her makeup.
Think this video must of been made after Tales of the Unexpected due to the reference to false eyelashes on the bottom lash line.
Found this from my photograph collection

Not sure if this is purple or blue, but it is exciting.

This palette is from supersizers do the 70’s and goes with green or hazel eyes.
Might copy this way of applying it.
There are so many ideas, going to have to choose one and go with it lol!!!
Think I have some of these colours in a pre covid Body Shop palette.
Also I have a sleek vintage romance palette in purples.
Joan Collins

This lipstick shade looks better than the air hostess one, but it similar wonder if it is in the application?
But then her lips are already perfect like Michael Parkinson points out.
I follow some of this idea already I think, but can’t remember.
I like the matte finish also, I prefer porcelain matte, then I think it is sort of doll like paint on top of the finish.
Remember purchasing this season of Tales of the unexpected, being inspired by Joan Collins Makeup and fashion looks, then going into my town shopping and found similar colours at the Guerlain counter. Not sure if this is Guerlain, but it did sponsor some of the episodes, also there are Guerlain perfumes at the airport.
It wasn’t that long ago, but they are obviously not there anymore.
Starting to realise the classic products that are timeless have been replaced by trends.
Not sure why as repeat purchases are an integral part of sales I would of thought?
Anyway I purchased this look and loved it.
Still got a brown Guerlain eyeshadow, but not got the lipstick.
Realise I got it wrong now anyway it was a deep burgandy colour, too dark for me according to the 60’s tutorial, unless it was actually acceptable for evening wear.

Duty Free Perfume and Makeup at the airport.
Noticably Guerlain and Worth Je Reviens.
Discovered Je Rievens last June, you have to scroll down as my blogs weren’t as focussed back then.
This is a similar Guerlain Bottle.
Pauline Collins
Can’t remember what year, but this look made a comeback as I used to do the lipstick. It was there until covid. I think women want it back now.

You need the right colour lipstick though.
You outline your lips with a darker colour, then you need this pretty colour lipstick and highlight with gloss.
Pauline’s eyeshadow looks like the palette I liked from No7 actually.
I would do this with fine eyebrows and maybe more eyeshadow, but I love this look if you could get the product.

The subtle cut crease.
Classic 70’s Air hostess look

This is the over the top 70’s airhostess look.
I think some people thought it was too much.
I love it as they could wear too much makeup and were also classed as beautiful.
I’m not sure I would do this exactly, but I used to mimmick it with Avon products
I used a more coral type red lipstick as I hadn’t screensnipped this actual image.
Not sure how you do bottom lashes?

This is my attempt at 70’s air hostess, I need a lot more blusher but I prefer pink lipstick or coral red.
It was a Halloween look, only discovered from Tales of the Unexpected that it was the air hostess look.
I love this look so am really happy if it is coming into fashion.
This is the first time I have ever tried it.
I would guess there will be natural looks also if you find this too much lol!!!
I think with the pink lip it doesn’t look too much.
Conclusion
Wonder if everyone is waiting for some new big thing in makeup?
Suppose it will happen.
These ideas were obviously really popular, then the Joan Collins look with gold and purple eyeshadow.
Going to try out the eyebrow pencil tip, maybe that is what Pauline Collins used? Have to say I am impressed with how good it looks.

Might outline my lips with brown eyebrow pencil, then fill it in with blonde eyebrow pencil, got stacks of eyebrow product from my advent calendars that I won’t be using on my eyebrows.

Just checked out my massive eyebrow pencil stash from benefit and might be onto something, you never know ~ the precision might be just what I need to outline my lips and go outside the line a little.

This is the natural look lip colour.
Not sure if it suits me, but I like it anyway.
Can’t remember which lip stick colour this is but guessing it is Mac pre covid.
The hair style is either Toni and Guy or Aveda pre covid.
I made the necklace myself.
I’m not a jewellery designer, it comes under the genre of Textile Artist which doesn’t exist anymore as I don’t think men liked the idea of a woman textile designer being an actual artist.
You couldn’t make any money out of it anyway so we diverted the buisness to something you could make money from.
You were allowed to exhibit in art galleries if you accepted you weren’t as good as art and would put up with being squashed into a corner.
Now it has gone back to knitting scarves and hats and toy making and so forth, which I’m not interested in and don’t like.

Playing around on photoshop, I wondered if I suited pink lipstick better?
And purple eyeshadow.
Got 2 Barry M pink lip liners from before covid, so maybe this trick can be adapted for pink ~ used to follow a tutorial that showed you how to do this.
Then gloss it over the top.
I think sometimes you are possibly better going for colours that suit you, than ones you like.
Will hopefully get my moneysworth out of the calendars yet lol!!!
Just noticed the 60’s makeup tutorial is right I suit lighter eyeshadow better than dark eyeshadow.
Rhoda
I think this was the natural look in response to the Air Hostess/Beauty Counter look as it was on an episode of Rhoda ~ the joke being you end up spending more money on the natural look and it takes more makeup.

Wonder if this was done with eyebrow pencil?
Used to love this lip look.
I found a brand at Boots called natural I think, that had loads of colours like this and the product retailed for about £1.99 a lipstick. It was a Boots own make and I loved it, still got a pale pink eyeshadow, then all the colours turned a horrible dark brown colour and I don’t think it is there anymore. Really annoying.
Found it ~ it is called ‘the natural collection’.
boots.com/natural-collection-lipstick
This is worse than the air hostess look if you are going for the natural look.

The packaging design is rubbish now also.
This is hideous?
Think the price has gone up also ~ as if you’d pay more for something you didn’t want?

So disappointed in the new lipstick. I used Cranberry in the old version for years and loved it. The new one is not only a different colour, but it’s a very sheer lip gloss with no depth of colour at all. I’ve had to look for another brand, which isn’t easy for me as I have allergies to so many ingredients in cosmetics. Such a shame as Natural Collection is one of the very few cosmetic brands that I can use, irrespective of cost, which was another plus for Natural Collection.

No, I wouldn’t recommend this product.
Think I used rose petal ~ that was why it was such an appealing brand and the colours were so pretty and pale.

This is a shame ~ guess that is the end of that product unless they put it back how it was ~ hope so.
They don’t even do pink eyeshadow anymore

I ordered this in Seedpearl hoping it would be similar to Marshmallow from the old range (which was one of my favourite eyeshadows and also a great highlighter for pale skin). Unfortunately, despite the fact it’s got “pearl” in the name, it’s completely matte and barely shows on my skin. I might use it as a base but that’s really not what I was looking for, I don’t like a powder base. I wouldn’t repurchase. I always really liked natural collection but I find the new range to be a total letdown tbh. There’s nothing in it that I’m interested in anymore. I hate all the earthy, warm neutrals and mattes. I know they’re probably just really unfashionable now but I miss the old shade range.

No, I wouldn’t recommend this product.
Marshmallow rings a bell also.
Think they have offended all their old customers and not attracted enough new ones.
The thing that was good about it was it was really cheap but good quality and aimed at a specific customer.
Now it is more expensive and the product is cheap and doesn’t work?
Now they have offended the customer, lost the customer and the product is futile?
Onwards and upwards
Definately trying out purple eyeshadow, apparently I suit green, whereas I thought I suited purple. I trust Joan Collins more so will do purple. Got a stash of purple from when Avon said I suited purple.
Purple is really 70’s and I love it.
Might try filling my lip with lip liner or eyebrow pencil then glossing over with lip gloss.
Maybe 70’s lipsticks were limited like now and how the look was invented ~ have to say I don’t like the air hostess lipstick colour, I thought it was coral red or coral ~ loved that colour at Avon as it felt summery in rainy Britain. There blend worked on me, even though I’m winter.
Conclusion
I think what women want is to look great, feel good about their image, then get out into the world and enjoy themselves, whatever their chin looks like or whatever age they are.
Before Covid you could go into a budget makeup shop and purchase any colour you wanted and do any look.
Then go to a department store and treat yourself to classic makeup or bronzers that suited your skin tone.
Hope this has inspired you too.
I have a Joan Collins book off Amazon that is packed with really good fashion and makeup tips.
I once cut an article by Joan Collins out of a magazine about how to apply makeup and stuck it into a little journal, it was how I learned to apply makeup.
Really good.
Had a collection of articles and beauty leaflets. Hoped I’d still got them somewhere but haven’t found them.
There are so many complaints out there, hopefully retailers will take the hint and create colours for everywoman again instead of hideous muddy colours and cheap bad quality rubbish that no one wants, except a few people that mustn’t be that fussy.
Sort of craving the natural collection now ~ perfect for Spring I always thought, when the snowdrops come out.

I’ve got some Dark Brown by Barbara Daly at Tesco, which is like the 70’s brown ~ stockpiled it for some reason

I always found that hard to find.
I’m guessing dark brown is rubbish as well, even though that is the only colour out there.
I’ve sort of got loads of makeup ideas, but only one weekend to do it.
The nerd photographs me and he is always busy, need an I phone or my own camera I suppose ~ could photograph my manicures also.
The 70’s palette was really versatile, you could try so many different looks, not like 2025.
Hope you enjoyed this blog and it may of inspired you to think outside the current muddy colour makeup box.
How someone has managed to make all the makeup brands one hideous colour I don’t know?
Maybe they should admit who they are and explain how and why they have done it?
At least it might make sense then.

Won’t be trying this till the 70’s but hopefully these are better quality than No7 and what people were saying about the natural collection.
If not I’ll use my pre covid makeup then when that runs out God Knows what people are supposed to do?
It is a miserable world out there at the moment.
Hope this offers a bit of inspiration in the meantime.
As women we need different makeup and looks that suit all women, not sure if we have ever had that, just selling campaigns for companies and corporations to make money out of us, rather than a service offering us the products we need to make the best of ourselves and enhance our lives as women.
Maybe these muddy brown colours have woken us all up and made us learn.
Whether you want blue eyeshadow or a natural peach lip or anything else, I truely hope your colours come back soon.
Enjoy your saturday.
