Before covid, I was starting to learn the difference between domestic makeup and makeup applied by makeup artists.

With a few ideas that have turned up on my pinterest, can’t help wondering if makeup brushes are like art brushes.

Thinking back my art teacher at college was fairly down-putting towards me and said I couldn’t paint.
He even ripped up a painting I’d done inspired by Monet.

Then looking at a photo of the painting he said it wasn’t that bad and he’d made a mistake giggling sadistically.
Have to say I found the project quite boring anyway, not Monet, which I love, but our rubbish art teachers project.
I agree I can’t paint though, I found painting boring at school as well.
I was good at physics and languages, but my mum made me take childcare and home economics.

I did get A in art, so it was my only chance to get some sort of post school education.
I’ve done loads of art courses and used truckloads of art brushes, so maybe I learnt something.

This was where I sort of finished with art.
The techniques are similar, this is a bit much compared to the effect you want from makeup, but similar to shading I suppose.
Can’t remember doing this.
When I try some old painting techniques the crappy art teacher taught me on my face, not sure if it suits me really.
It is either I’m rubbish or it doesn’t suit my face shape.
I think sketching my face on paper then trying to work out how to fake the bits I want to change might be a good start. (Noticed they do that at Mac cosmetics on Instagram).
Again it is getting art products delivered that is hard, then loading the images up when our printer and scanner are broken.
One thing I don’t get is the amount of makeup brushes there are and what they all do.
Hence this blog and where this makeup journey starts.

Would really like to learn what they all do so thought I would start here.
A bit laborious and boring maybe, but just looking at them doesn’t really explain it to me.
The makeup world seems very divided at the moment so that doesn’t help either.
My skin is combination so I tend to need matte rather than shiny powder? noticed a tutorial saying that and how she struggles to get her lipstick shade also.
Later on I can share a tip for how to get red to work if it isn’t your look or thing. Hopefully by then more colours will have come back on the market.
As I’m not very good at art I can’t expect miracles, but would be happy to try and get better and learn a few tricks at least. As I wear makeup anyway will always wear makeup unlike art which I might not do again.
Maybe this might even inspire me to do a bit of art again one day.
Foundation brushes and applicators
Foundation is sort of the first product you use, but I forgot the trick of putting foundation on after you have done your eye makeup as eyeshadow usually drops over your foundation. This means taking it off and reapplying.
Decided to go to boots as it is the only place I can get products from.
There are a lot of offers this week so worth browsing:

Quite like how the Lancome brushes are numbered one and two as art brushes are. I used to choose them by their numbers so getting a feel for this now.
Conclusion
Was just going to get one foundation brush but got distracted with knowledge and offers.
These products are really well described and kind of explain it better than I can.
I really like foundation brushes for foundation application as it goes on really well and is a satisfying job.
Applying foundation like an artist
I’d say the foundation part is easy as you are wanting a good coverage like painting a wall. You don’t want any gaps or splashes, so it needs to be smooth and possibly flat.
This is easy it is the sculpting part I’m rubbish at.
I just put some foundation on my brush and cover my whole face, adding more foundation if necessary.
With these advanced brushes, you can blend the foundation to create an airbrushed look.
I’ve never tried this, so need to practice and find some tutorials by professional makeup artists.
Click the link below for makeup tutorials on you tube.
Was recommended tutorials on YouTube by a computer professor at the local university. Before Covid, you used to be able to get tutorials on any subject. Hopefully, it will all come back now as I was learning makeup and jewellery making.
If you use a sponge applicator normally and fancy trying this browse the foundation brushes either at boots or where you purchase your products.
I recommend makeup brush cleaner also.
Keep your sponges though as you may prefer them.
I used to use the brush for photos and sponges when I wanted to be quick just to go shopping etc.
The artist’s method is probably just for photos or nights out anyway I guess.
It is all practice and preference.
Hope there is something of interest for you here and will do a different brush next week.
