Movie of the week

Goldberg stars as Bernice “Bernie” Rhodenbarr, a professional burglar trying to go straight after opening a bookstore in San Francisco. But when a simple job goes sideways, she suddenly finds herself framed for murder. With the cops closing in, Bernie must use her sharp tongue, street smarts, and unlikely allies to prove her innocence. Packed with 1980s flair, witty one-liners, and Whoopi at the height of her comedic powers, Burglar remains a cult favorite that showed Hollywood she could command the screen beyond her dramatic breakout in The Color Purple (1985).

(Actually Top Pop but same format)

Its plot follows a bored housewife who takes on an alternate persona that starts wreaking havoc on her life. Karen Black plays the title role, a dowdy, downtrodden housewife plagued by recurring nightmares of funerals, black flowers, fires, and a woman called Sandy. Seeking an escape from her stifling lifestyle and dull husband, who only wishes her to have a baby, Black dons a low-cut red blouse, blonde wig, garish makeup, and a new identity. She is also compelled to buy a house in a beach community where it would appear a woman who looks just like her once resided – before her tragic demise.

A family moves into a large old mansion in the countryside which seems to have a mysterious and sinister power over its new residents.

Saturday
Saturday Walk Club
Nice easy one for you again for when you are ready to get into the swing again.
This was my first Christmas walk ~ perfect to get your body up and running again.
The Ballerina Camp workout is a bit more bootcampy if you want a longer one.
This is turning out to be quite a good introduction back into exercise after Christmas ~ Ballet can actually be for women older than toddlers and teenagers. I’m actually enjoying it to my surprise ~ worth a browse.

Nellie takes Eli to a Blackpool boarding house run by landlady Mrs. Rowbottom, whose eyes light upon bachelor Eli. Eli though, only has eyes for the younger Freda. Complications ensue when Eli, Nellie, Mrs. Rowbottom and Freda all try to gain control of the factory, causing ensuing farcical mishaps. Eli’s attempts to further his financial ambitions by marrying off Nellie to a colleague in the pickling business are challenged when Vernon Smallpiece is snatched from the altar by bailiffs for non-payment of his debts.

Sunday
Roast Woodland Chicken and Fleurie Boujolais

We sort of did a Delia Christmas this year as we both had flu and couldn’t get chicken so opted for beef ~ really glad I’d watched Delia and had got the idea.
Last week we got our New Years day game chicken.
I’m not a cook but I do like cooking on a Sunday.
I felt I should be doing a Floyd recipe with these two products as Woodland Chicken makes me think of wild mushrooms and Floyd in France.
We had it with potatoes, veg and Aunt Bessies Yorkshire puds ~ you might want to do something more fancy.
This chicken was gorgeous and gamey.
You will notice black scales as it is a black chicken, it has a few feather stubs on it but Delia says to just leave them, they sort of burn off during the basting and roasting process. I tried the skin and it tasted lovely.
Take the string wrapped round it off before cooking.
This would really impress your dinner guests.
The wine is obviously one to impress guests who know about wine, but if you are like me it is also drinkable and not too strong.
(Have to admit to noticing the violets and red berries, very pretty)
Think it would be good if you had women guests who weren’t wine drinkers but like to drink to be social like me.
Give this a try – bit different to your corn fed chicken.
Noticed it is available at most supermarkets we got ours from Sainsbury’s.
The wine was a christmas present.
Enjoy!!!
Loaded up some new ones for you.

Key Facts about Fay Weldon & Upstairs, Downstairs
- The Pilot Episode: Weldon wrote the very first episode, “On Trial,” which first aired in 1971 and introduced the world to the grand house at 165 Eaton Place.

Upstairs, Downstairs S01E01 – On Trial
Chose this as she is my favourite writer ~ she also wrote The She Devil.
