New Section for this year:

Mermaids

In “Emily and the Mermaid,” A nineteenth century coastal island farm girl (Emily McAllister) and a mermaid (Amelia Dearheart) become friends and grow up together. When they rescue Prince Arthur, they’re invited to live in the palace. Emily and Amelia find that Beauteous Kingdom and neighboring Kakisland are dysfunctional fairy tale kingdoms. When the inevitable crisis hits, it will take the combined skills of humans, mermaids, naiads, undines, melusines, and fairies to restore peace and bring about common sense.

This is about a man obsessed with turning 50. Sit back relax for this wonderful fantasy. One of my all-time favorites. At this Posting, Ann Blythe was 92 & still living. William Powell passed away in his 90’s in 1984. This was one of my all-time favorites.

When Love is Blindsided, Lies are Lost in Time. During the final months of WW2, a lonely German Baroness hides an attractive American airman in her mansion for long time without telling him the war has been over for almost five years.

Gangsters & Molls

Rock superstar Mick Jagger stars in a stunning reality/fantasy trip set in London’s underworld. A criminal hides out at the residence of a bizarre rock star (Jagger) and his mysterious and beautiful companion (Anita Pallenberg, Barbarella). A gripping, psychological melodrama and cult favorite, with a fabulous soundtrack by Jack Nitzsche (The Exorcist, Stand By Me), under the direction of Academy Award-winner Randy Newman (Monsters Inc.), and of course the Stones.

Poor Cow (1967)

A young woman lives a life filled with bad choices, she has a child with an abusive thief at a young age who quickly ends up in prison. One day, her son goes missing and she briefly comes to grips with what is most important to her.

goes off without a hitch, but when Reese realizes the take isn’t as
large as he had hoped, he kills Walker–or so he thinks. Some time
later, Walker decides it’s time to get his share of the money and starts
with his ex-wife Lynne, who took up with Reese after the shooting. That
leads him on a trail–to his wife’s sister Chris, to Reese himself,
then onto Big Stegman, then Frederick Carter, then up the line of
gangsters in an effort to get money from people who simply won’t
acknowledge that they owe him anything.

A small town dreamer. A small time con man. An unlikely friendship. An uncommon bond. Oscar winners Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman star in this Academy Award winning drama for Best Picture. Nearly 40 years after its original release, Midnight Cowboy “is still heartbreaking and timeless” (The New York Observer).

Doctors and Nurses

Amidst a flurry of patients and eccentric doctors, a medical professional navigates a chaotic hospital. The film explores various medical cases and humorous interactions, offering a glimpse into 1960s British medical practice. Enjoy the quirky characters and lighthearted drama.

“Doctor in Clover” offers a comedic look inside a British hospital. Patients with unusual ailments and eccentric doctors create hilarious situations. Expect plenty of witty banter and slapstick amidst the medical mayhem.

Doctor At Sea | Classic Comedy (1955)

Bachelor Dr. Simon Sparrow (Dirk Bogarde) goes to sea to escape the boredom of shore practice, but studies the nurses more than medicine, and Hélène Colbert (Brigitte Bardot) is around.

doctor in trouble/1970

doctor-in-the-house-1979

Carry on Doctor (1967)

The popular Dr Kilmore (Jim Dale) is sacked after being discovered in a compromising position on the roof of the nurses’ home. The patients (Frankie Howerd, Sid James, Bernard Bresslaw and Charles Hawtrey) are determined not to lose him, and so take on the might of the “cutting” Dr Tinkle (Kenneth Williams) and the domineering Matron (Hattie Jacques). Barbara Windsor and a bevy of pretty girls as the nursing staff round out the cast in this chaotic Carry-on medical movie. Carry On Doctor was the first medical theme–based Carry On film for eight years, and was the first of two Carry On films to star the comedian Frankie Howerd.

Carry On Again Doctor (1969)

Dr Nookey is disgraced and sent to a remote island hospital. He is given a secret slimming potion by a member of staff, Gladstone Screwer, and he flies back to England to fame and fortune. But others want to cash in on his good fortunes, and some just want him brought down a peg or two.

Asylum (1972)

In order to secure a job at a mental institution, a young psychiatrist must interview four patients inside the asylum.

Following his forced retirement from an appalling rock band, Jason decides to vacation at Brittlehouse Manor, a health farm run by the leather-gloved, ex-Nazi scientist Dr. Storm. Along the way, Jason meets Judy, also on her way to Brittlehouse Manor to visit her aunt, who married Dr. Storm some years ago. Once they arrive, the pair realise rather quickly that something is wrong, probably because the other guests have had their brains surgically removed, or all the blood pouring from the sink, or possibly just because the creepy midget keeps telling them to brush their teeth.

Three years after murdering his parents, Patrick (Thompson) lies in a coma at the Roget Clinic, a private hospital in Melbourne. Following a job interview with Matron Cassidy (Blake), the head of the hospital, Kathie Jacquard (Penhaligon) is taken on as Patrick’s new nurse. The hospital’s owner, Dr. Roget (Helpmann), explains Patrick’s condition to Kathie and says he is being kept alive to explore the nature of life and death. He also says that another patient, Capt. Fraser (Pym), claims that Patrick “flies in and out of the window at night.” Elsewhere, Kathie deals with her ex-husband Ed (Mullinar), who she recently separated from.

VAMPIRES & WEREWOLVES

Vampires

Dracula 1979

Dracula 1979 This is not like the novel much at all, especially the plot but it is actually very close to Stoker’s 1924 stage version he wrote following the massive success of his book. It was directed by John Badham (he directed Saturday Night Fever) and he added a lot of Mills & Boon style romance into it too which definitely was missing from both the novel and play!

Journey through Transylvania and Victorian London in this gothic horror classic. A solicitor’s assignment takes a dark turn, revealing ancient secrets and a sinister plot. Expect shocking encounters and a race against time to confront the undead Count.

An evil hypnotist puts a beautiful woman under his spell.

Blacula (1972)

Blacula (1972) is a cult-classic Blaxploitation horror film that redefined the vampire genre. When African prince Mamuwalde is cursed by Count Dracula, he rises centuries later as Blacula—bringing terror to modern Los Angeles. This groundbreaking film blends Gothic horror with 1970s culture and remains one of the most iconic Black horror films of all time.

Although Count Dracula (David Niven) has plenty of victims, he’s grown lonely, and wants nothing more than to bring back to life his great love, Countess Vampira (Teresa Graves). The trouble is, he needs a very rare blood type in order to revive her, and, despite having opened up his castle to tourists, none of them is a match. It’s not until a group of Playboy models visits that he finds it, but, when he administers it to Countess Vampira, her skin color changes from white to black.

A vivacious lady moves to a quaint Wiltshire village and enlivens the social set, but her arrival coincides with the outbreak of an inexplicable blood disease amongst the locals. Creepy or what?

The story telling has wonderful economy for such a short piece. In the first half every frame and sound adds crucial information for the viewer, so the ground is covered twice as quick as you’d expect from a full feature. And there’s an impressive long take at a garden fete, with the lead actress moving from one interaction to another with great skill.

Sensual vampire story stars rock legend David Bowie (“The Man Who Fell to Earth,” “The Last Temptation of Christ”) as an ailing centuries-old vampire whose fanged-lover, Catherine Deneuve (“Indochine,” “Repulsion,” “Belle de Jour”), seeks a new partner and seduces a mortal medical researcher (Oscar-winner Susan Sarandon.
