Wrote 2 blogs about this perfume already.

Yves Saint Laurent launched the Rive Gauche ready-to-wear clothing line in 1966. The Rive Gauche perfume was released in 1971.

Rive Gauche clothing line

  • Yves Saint Laurent opened the first ready-to-wear boutique under his name in Paris on September 26, 1966.
  • The store was located on the Left Bank of the Seine in a former antiques store.
  • The name Rive Gauche translates to “left bank” in French.
  • The store was a success, with some customers waiting hours to buy items.

Rive Gauche perfume

  • The perfume was created by perfumers Jacques Polge and Michael Hy in 1969.
  • The perfume was reformulated in 2003 by Daniela Andrier and Jacques Hy.
  • The bottle was designed by Pierre Dinnand.
  • The perfume is an aldehydic floral fragrance with top notes of aldehydes, green notes, honeysuckle, bergamot, peach, and lemon.
  • The perfume is said to capture the lifestyle of the Left Bank of Paris.

Perfume critic Luca Turin considered Rive Gauche as the “best floral aldehydic of all time”. It is a classic aldehyde with a floral heart and woody base notes.

I think a lot of women would have had Rive Gauche perfume in the 70’s.

I would guess it was a man in a 70’s advertising agency who came up with this concept as this was his type of woman.

Looking back at last weeks sensuous advert, I realise the similarities.

Vaguely remember not liking the Estee Lauder advert now.

It was the sales rep at the department store who sold it to me.

Hideous

Maybe this was equally hideous to women like Margo in the 70’s; she wasn’t contemporary according to this advert, because she was married.

The complexities of actual sales

Bizarely thinking this through, I realise she probably would of purchased this perfume even though she may of hated the advert.

The fragrance basically says 70’s to me.

I also notice the similarities in male orientated graphics that women hate, but at the same time can be co hersed into purchasing by top sales reps with clever sales techniques of getting round women like Barbara always manages to do with Margo.

Margo is definately contemporary in her 70’s fashion choices.

The ‘Sweet era’

Now you are allowed to be honest, I’m not a fan of sweet perfume, but it has taken over the perfume market considerably.

Like sweet wine only appeals to teenagers.

(noticed bloggers moaning about sweet perfumes and celebrity perfumes).

I purchased some of my perfumes from films, but maybe that is different?

Re emmergnce of Vintage perfumes

I wonder if this is why we are seeing a comeback of classics from the past.

I love the YSL Rive Gauche advert, even though it may annoy married women, it is far more empowering than the Sensuous advert.

Conclusion

Thinking about it YSL Rive Gauche must of been at department stores when I was purchasing perfume.

As I like the older fragrances and history and found myself in Victorian times, I realise I usually opt for more traditional bottles.

I always opted for vintage bottles

Rive Gauche ‘was’ too modern looking.

Therefore what sold it to me?

I realise it was the advert.

It is actually more contemporary than now with frumpy covid fashion.

Must admit I also prefer 70’s fashion to 80’s fashion.

What is missing now is aesthetics in advertising.

Could the 70’s of been more empowering for women than now?

I prefer YSL Rive Gauche to sweet or celebrity perfume.

I’m not a celebrity so I don’t aspire to be a celebrity.

I am one of the average women out there though and these type of adverts are aimed at ‘her’, the average woman out there.

Whole companies used to work on these adverts, like the one Jerry worked at and Tom left.

If you watch the series to the end it explains why ‘Sirs’ company worked and Toms idea doesn’t.

What would Jerry have to say about sweet celebrity perfumes of now?

Maybe he would relaunch some old perfumes first to get it going again?

Maybe next they could bring back the original strength perfume everyone is moaning about.

I like original Chloe.

Hope you enjoyed this blog
