Learnt how to do these from a magazine. Got loads of free wool with the magazine, unfortunately I was allergic to it as it was obviously really cheap. It is probably better to practice with cheap wool at first, but if you get into crochet, I would advise buying high quality wool, most especially with baby projects. I came out in a rash, but I knew what it was, you need to be really careful with babies.
It was really annoying actually as I spent hours making a scarf, then we got harsh covid rules about clothes and I actually had prepared myself but couldn’t use what I had made, typical!!!

Think there are loads of sheep and alpaca farmers wanting to sell high grade wool, so would definately purchase the right make for crochet.
bought a few acrylic colours to practice with again. You need a few to make granny squares, bit like eyeshadow quads. The magazine did this for you, so need to learn how to choose the colour combinations.
